The ACS Hands-on Forensic Chromatography Class

There was a dream and the dream could best be stated thusly:

Develop an expertise in that which interests you. learn, lean, learn, then do something totally counter-intuitive…. give away your knowledge for free to everyone and anyone who will listen. Become the proverbial Johnny Appleseed. People will love you for it and justice will result. This is a life well lived and legacy made.

In part of fulfilling that thought and dream, Josh D. Lee and I had a dream to develop a class that focused on the theory and practice of Gas Chromatography in DUI ethanol-based cases. We wanted to develop a scientific course and then teach trial advocacy skills to help lawyers explain this to judges and juries to empower them to reject bad science and only accept valid science.

That vision lead to us to Axion Labs, Inc. in Chicago, IL and Dr. Harold McNair, Dr. Lee Polite and Lew Fox. Together the five of us developed the American Chemical Society Hands-on Forensic Chromatography class. According to the website for the class at www.ForensicChromatography.com

In this class you will not only be instructed in the classroom theory that underlies chromatography (both liquid and gas chromatography) in general and the specific theories that allow for headspace analysis and how Flame Ionization Detector, UV-DAD and Mass Spectrometry (EI and EC based) works, and get to see the instruments, but you will do the following with your own two hands and more.
