The Forensic Science Geek of the Week
The week 36 “www.TheTruthAboutForensicScience.com Forensic Science Geek of the Week” honors goes to:
RON MOORE
- Ron Moore, Esquire-Forensic Science Geek of the Week
As frequent viewers of this blog site will know, Ron Moore is a frequent winner of this weekly competition. He is a unique lawyer in the fact that he has a technical background in forensic science. He spent many years working as an analyst and a supervisor. Very recently, he accepted a job as an associate with the Law Office of Virginia L. Landry in Orange County. The addition of Ron Moore to an already all-star office including the office’s principle Virginia L. Landry who is already well-known and well-regarded along with another great attorney Meghan O’Brien-Taylor will be of major benefit to all of the motorists and citizens accused of DUI and related charges in Orange County.
RON MOORE is Week 36’s www.TheTruthAboutForensicScience.com Forensic Science Geek of the Week!

Our Geek of the Week answered:
This is the calibration system for an HP or Agilent 5973 CG/MSD. It is used to introduce a specific compound such as PFTBA that can be analyzed for retention time and spectra and compared to the library to determine if the unit is functioning properly. this is part of the tune and calibration of the GC/MSD instrument. (actually, since this is attached to the MSD, it just calibrates the MSD, not the GC portion)
[BLOGGER’S NOTE: The “tune” of a GC-MS is very important. PFTBA is introduced into the Mass Spectrometer portion which is why Ron was correct to put in his subsequent post that it is used to calibrate the M/Z and relative abundances in the MS. It has nothinng to do with the calinbratiojn of the GC itself or the retention time caused by the GC itself. There should be a “tune” report every time a GC-MS is run.
Here is as short video that will help to explain its importance…
