Our winner answered the question correctly.  Please visit the www.TheTruthAboutForensicScience.com FaceBook fan page.

Our Geek of the Week answered:

The man is Dr. Harold McNair PhD. He is basically the father of modern Gas Chromatography. He is a professor at Virginia Tech University and the creator and former owner of Varian, Inc., manufacturer of GCs.

Around his arm is a Capillary column about to be installed in a GC. You can tell this because he has a cutter in his hand and is cutting the end of the column to get rid of possible contamination.

The instrument behind his right shoulder is an HPLC. Similar to a gas chromatography but the mobile phase is liquid instead. The instrument behind his left shoulder is a GC with what appears to be a headspace autosampler attached to it.
