The week 37 “www.TheTruthAboutForensicScience.com Forensic Science Geek of the Week” honors goes to: Jeffrey Benson
At the time of this post Jeffrey Benson (other than an email address) is a mystery to us, but he has answered two incredibly hard Forensic Science Geek of the Week posts correctly recently. I have emailed him to try to get some details so we can promote him, but so far there has been no answer. Maybe by publishing this post, it will encourage him to come forward and claim his rightful place in our Hall of Fame.
Congratulations to our Forensic Science Geek of the Week winner!
See the challenge question that our winner correctly answered.
OFFICIAL QUESTION:
1. Who is this?
2. Why is he significant in the context of forensic science?
Our Geek of the Week answered:
This is a picture of Mark Nifong. He was the district attorney of Durham County, North Carolina and prosecuted the 2006 Duke lacrosse case. The significant part of the story was the withholding of exculpatory DNA results from the defense. The director of the DNA lab released a partial report to the defense that did not include the DNA results the showed a male DNA mixture that excluded all the accused lacrosse players.
The lesson from that case is that you MUST request the entire DNA file from the crime lab. Actually, you should request the entire file from the entire crime lab. As I say it: I want every scrap of paper related to the case.
I can recall watching shocked as Nifong, on Good Morning America, explained how it wasn’t surprising that there wasn’t any DNA evidence in the case as most rapes cases had no DNA.
