Forensic Science Geek of the Week

The week 37 “www.TheTruthAboutForensicScience.com Forensic Science Geek of the Week” honors goes to: Jeffrey Benson

At the time of this post Jeffrey Benson (other than an email address) is a mystery to us, but he has answered two incredibly hard Forensic Science Geek of the Week posts correctly recently. I have emailed him to try to get some details so we can promote him, but so far there has been no answer. Maybe by publishing this post, it will encourage him to come forward and claim his rightful place in our Hall of Fame.

Congratulations to our Forensic Science Geek of the Week winner!

See the challenge question that our winner correctly answered.

OFFICIAL QUESTION:

Forensic Science Geek of the Week Challenge

1. Who is this?

2. Why is he important or significant in the forensic science community?

3. Why should we care who he is?

Our Geek of the Week answered:

This is Sean Hoey. He was charged with 29 counts of murder, terrorism and explosives charges in the Omagh bombing in Northern Ireland in 1998. The significant part of his case was the reliance on low copy number (or low count) DNA. The use of low copy number (LCN) DNA evidence was successfully challenged based on the problems caused by stochastic effects (drop-out, drop-in, enhanced stutter products, and detection of secondary and possibly tertiary transfer) when using such small amount of input DNA.

This case reminds us that the defense should be vigilant in contesting the use of novel forensic science techniques like LCN DNA testing.
