- Forensic Science Geek of the Week Challenge
1. What is this?
2. In what forensic science discipline is this creature useful?
3. How can it be used?
Our Geek of the Week answered:
1. What is this? This is a fly, specifically a bow fly.
2. In what forensic science discipline is this creature useful? Not sure the actual name you are looking for. It’s used in crime scene investigation to determine the time of death. Forensic entomology.
3. How can it be used? They are usually the first to detect and respond to dead bodies because they have heightened smell for decaying bodies. Also, their breeding and hatching patterns are very predictable and, as long as the ambient temperature is known, they can be used to determine the time of death of the corpse.
[BLOGGER’S NOTE: Just to amplify… Blow flies are attracted to dead bodies and often arrive within minutes of the death of an animal. They have a complete life cycle that consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages.
